Maybe we can dismantle the patriarchy and save the planet at the same time.
For hundreds of years, powerful men have been building companies and empires that treated people unethically and created lots of pollution. The consequences? Climate change and systemic oppression.
Because women have been linked with nature for most of human history (think “Mother Nature” or “fertile land”), patriarchal and imperial ideas have worked hand in hand to both oppress women and control/exploit land and natural resources. Of course, this same concept can be applied to other groups marginalized due to race, sexuality, gender identity, ability (think about the terms “savages” and “natives”).
How can we change this? First: let’s change the way we talk about nature and people. Why? Because we make decisions based on the way we perceive the world, and the way we think is reflected in the way we speak and write. So if we want to change how people think, we have to start with how people communicate. This project seeks to expose and explore the different ways we communicate about the environment in the effort of imagining ecotopias.
